Lions Club of Ragama Legends — Lions Clubs International chapter, Sri Lanka

Building a donation platform and AEO strategy for a Lions Clubs International chapter

A donation-ready, trilingual website for Lions Club of Ragama Legends — a Sri Lankan chapter of Lions Clubs International's 1.4-million-member global network — built with a real bank-hosted payment integration and a forward-looking SEO/AEO/GEO strategy, delivered through my company, My Smart Need (Private) Limited.

Context

Lions Club of Ragama Legends is a community-service chapter chartered under Lions Clubs International (District 306 D5), founded 2024, serving the Ragama area across education, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and social welfare. As part of an international movement built on public donations, the site had to support genuine online giving — not just a bank-transfer notice — and be discoverable both by traditional search and by the AI answer engines people increasingly ask directly instead of searching.

The challenge

A community organization needs donors to trust it with an actual payment, not a promise — which meant integrating a real bank-hosted payment gateway with proper success, failure, and cancellation handling, not a 'contact us to donate' form standing in for one. It also needed to be findable in two different and growing ways: classic search engines, and the AI-driven answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews) that people increasingly ask directly 'how do I donate to X' — something most small nonprofit sites aren't built for at all.

Approach

Built a full payment flow around a bank-hosted payment page (People's Bank) — dedicated checkout, success, failed, and cancelled states — rather than a generic form standing in for donations, so a donor's actual payment experience is handled properly end to end.

Tracked the SEO/AEO/GEO foundation as a real phased engagement through closed GitHub issues rather than a single "SEO pass" — JSON-LD structured data (Organization, WebSite, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, DonateAction schema), canonical URLs, a multilingual sitemap, hreflang for EN/SI/TA, and full Open Graph/Twitter metadata.

Went beyond classic SEO into AEO/GEO — publishing llms.txt and llms-full.txt so AI answer engines can accurately cite the club's mission, donation process, and membership requirements instead of hallucinating them, alongside FAQPage schema so common questions can be lifted directly into AI-generated answers.

Ran an honest gap audit rather than declaring the site finished: identified which pages weren't yet indexable and prioritized what to build next instead of treating the initial launch as complete.

Built on a genuinely internationalized foundation from the start — trilingual EN/SI/TA content with proper hreflang, appropriate for a chapter of a 200+-country movement even while serving one local community.

What shipped

Full donation payment flow: hosted checkout via People's Bank, with proper success/failed/cancelled states, alongside the club's existing bank-transfer option.

Membership join flow, events/projects tracking (upcoming vs. completed), and a newsletter archive with a flipbook-style PDF reader.

Structured data for both classic and AI search: Organization/WebSite/FAQPage/BreadcrumbList/DonateAction JSON-LD, plus llms.txt/llms-full.txt for AI answer engines.

Trilingual (EN/SI/TA) content with hreflang, a multilingual XML sitemap, and full security headers (CSP, HSTS).

Sentry error monitoring and Playwright E2E coverage (contact form, homepage, language switching, mobile nav, navigation) from day one.

Lessons

A nonprofit's website has one job donors actually care about: can I trust this enough to pay you. That's why the payment flow got the same rigor as the SEO work — proper success/failure states, not a form. And the SEO itself went further than a typical local-organization site needs to, because "how do I donate to X" and "how do I join Y" are exactly the kind of questions people increasingly ask an AI assistant instead of a search bar — being structured for that (llms.txt, FAQPage schema, DonateAction schema) now is cheap insurance most small organizations aren't buying yet.
